Fail to plan and you plan to fail.  Yes, we’ve all heard it and of course, doing your interview homework is crucial, but a lot of candidates seem to neglect the importance of  dressing appropriately for interview.

1.    Look the part – You may think that appearances shouldn’t matter, but the plain fact is that you are often judged before you’ve even uttered a word.  Make sure that your shoes are polished/clean, that your clothes fit correctly and that your accessories are subtle.

2.    Gaudy jewellery and jokey ties can be distracting, unless you’re going for an acting job or promotional role where dressing up is required!  Dressing one level above the job you’re applying for however, shows a desire to succeed.

3.    Don’t go into the interview with lots of baggage.  Take the bare minimum with you, so that you can concentrate on the interview and nothing else.  I would suggest an A4 folder with your CV enclosed, a pen for the opportunity to jot down some notes and a short prompt of the questions you are going to ask at the end of the interview.

4.    It might be a good opportunity to invest in a smart suit or coordinating separates. Consider how that investment will pay off if you get a super job!  It doesn’t have to break the bank, but think about how much you spend on your mobile phone.

5.    I have my own wardrobe challenges with longer than average limbs and broad shoulders and I often struggle finding blouses/trousers to fit off the peg.  I tend to shop from a clothing store specializing in Tall women’s outfits and I might pay a bit more, but feel confident knowing my clothes fit and will likely last me for a few seasons.

6.    For those on a budget, there is a much greater quality of second hand goods at select Charity shops these days too, so shop around.

7.    Avoid any last-minute panic by preparing what you’re going to wear the night before…and make sure it’s ironed if required.

Dressing to impress doesn’t have to be expensive, but being clean and tidy is crucial. If you look good, you tend to feel good too.  If you feel good, you are more likely to exude confidence at interview and who knows, might even pip the other candidates to the post! (photo:@charlesdeluvio)
