There are many ways to find a job and Linked in and Facebook have had a major impact on the way recruitment works today.

The Three most effective means of securing a job are:

    • Networking – old or new contacts
    • Applying for advertised jobs – Press or Internet
    • Registering with recruitment agencies/job sites

By far the most effective is Networking,  otherwise known as the Hidden market because it is not directly visible.  Ideally you want to find the jobs before they are advertised and filled!

SEVEN STEPS TO NETWORKING SUCCESS

1.  Think about all the people you know, have known and who they know.

2.  The best place to start developing your network is with your family, friends, and neighbours – and with their family, friends, and neighbours, but don’t stop there…

3.   Talk to co-workers, colleagues in your industry, and those you meet at industry gatherings, such as trade shows and conferences.

4.  Develop your own network – contact and keep in touch with friends and former co-workers, bosses, and teachers to give you “visibility”. Linkedin is great for this.

5.  What about Leisure pursuits – at the gym?

6.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help – most people want to help and can keep eyes and ears open for you and arrange introductions or referrals to people.

7.  Remember to go back and say “thank you” to your contacts if you get a star job or successful referral.

You might feel a bit awkward to start with, but challenge yourself, set some realistic goals and don’t give up!  If at first……
