Whether sending a CV or an application form, a covering letter is an excellent opportunity to convey energy and enthusiasm, show your personal motivation for the job in question and enhance your chances of getting called forward for interview.
ALWAYS send a covering letter, even with on-line job sites unless you are explicitly requested not to do so!
Why is it important?
- First document a prospective employer will see
- Draws attention to your Unique Selling Points
- Competitive advantage – often neglected by candidates
What should it contain?
- If you know the name of the recruiter, then personalise it
- Write in a way to make the reader want to read your application form or CV
- Every sentence is valuable and should be tailored to the vacancy
- Highlight your strengths against key criteria
- Pick out some bullet points that may be similar to achievements on your CV
- Explain the contribution you can bring to the organisation.
- Should be no longer than 3-4 paragraphs – include bullet points
- Don’t fall foul of the correct salutation – yours faithfully for sir/madam or yours sincerely for Mr/Mrs
Try and reflect back the language of the company (via website, job description etc).
Most jobs are on-line these days but if submitting a hard copy then use good quality paper.
Finally.. Check spelling, grammar, print it off and check it again and get someone to check it for you! Now….start preparing for that interview!
